North Dakota’s Roughrider Coin went live on October 1, 2026, marking the first production use case on Fiserv’s newly launched digital-asset platform, with transactions settling on the Solana blockchain and access extended to more than 90 participating banks and credit unions across the state.
The launch was announced by Fiserv, which confirmed its digital-asset platform is now live with financial-institution clients. Bank of North Dakota’s dollar-backed Roughrider Coin is the platform’s debut use case, distributed through Fiserv’s Commercial Center product. North Dakota announced the USD-backed Roughrider Coin initiative earlier this year, and the October 1 go-live converts that plan into an operational network. Four-Party Architecture Powers the Rollout
The infrastructure behind Roughrider Coin involves four named participants. VersaBank serves as issuer and custodian, handling minting, burning, and reserve-asset management within a nationally regulated framework. Fireblocks provides the secure digital-asset infrastructure and tokenization layer, according to the Fiserv announcement. Fiserv’s Commercial Center serves as the distribution interface through which member institutions access the coin, while Solana processes the underlying transactions. The choice of Solana as the settlement network places this state-chartered initiative on one of the higher-throughput public blockchains currently operating. More than 90 participating North Dakota banks and credit unions are expected to be able to use Roughrider Coin via Fiserv Commercial Center.
Fiserv and Solana’s Roles in the Rollout
Fiserv’s role is primarily distribution and platform infrastructure. The firm’s Commercial Center product connects the issuer, custodian, and tokenization provider into a single interface that community banks and credit unions can access without building bespoke digital-asset pipelines. Sunil Sachdev, speaking for Fiserv, said the firm is “helping clients unlock new efficiencies in banking and payments while maintaining the trust, security and regulatory standards they expect,” per the official announcement.
Solana functions as the settlement layer. Roughrider Coin transactions are processed on-chain via Solana, meaning each transfer between participating institutions settles on the public network. SOL was trading at $118.90 at time of writing, down 1.10% over 24 hours, with a market cap near $69.9 billion.
Don Morgan, speaking on behalf of Bank of North Dakota, said the launch “builds on that legacy by giving our partner community banks and credit unions a new tool to move money more efficiently across North Dakota’s interbank network,” as reported by CryptoPotato. The statement frames the coin as an interbank efficiency tool rather than a retail product, a distinction that shapes who can access it at this stage.
Broader access terms, consumer eligibility, and any expansion timeline beyond the initial 90-plus institution network have not been specified in the announcement. The SEC’s evolving crypto custody framework remains a background variable for any dollar-backed institutional coin operating at this scale. Watch for Fiserv client disclosures and Bank of North Dakota operational updates in the coming weeks as the network moves from launch to active use.
